George went to the University of Nebraska and got a Mechanical Engineering degree and an Air Force commission. Marianne became a Registered Nurse and worked at community hospitals wherever they were stationed. It was always the family goal to return to agriculture. While stationed at Holloman AFB, near Alamogordo, the family learned to love the desert, so the mission was to find a crop that would thrive here. Searching in encyclopedias for desert crops, pistachios kept coming to the top of the list. The Schweers pioneered the pistachio industry in New Mexico, and 38 years later they maintain their reputation for growing premium pistachios. All three children remain actively connected to the business. George and Marianne are shown here by the 1928 International, one ton truck that George learned to drive when he was seven.
